Ultima 1 Unity
A downloadable game for Windows
⚠️ EARLY ACCESS ⚠️
This project is in active development and not yet feature-complete. The core game systems are implemented and playable from character creation through the Mondain boss fight, but expect rough edges, missing features, and ongoing changes. Your feedback helps shape the final release!
A fan made attempt at a faithful, from-the-binaries rebuild of the 1981 original and 1987 DOS remake of Richard Garriott's Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness, rebuilt in Unity.
This is a free, non-commercial fan project. You will need to own a legitimate copy of the original game (for example the Ultima I–VI collection on GOG) to enjoy it in the spirit intended. This project is not affiliated with, nor endorsed by, Richard Garriott, Origin Systems, or the current Ultima trademark holders.
Trying to Rebuild a Classic
This is not an emulator and not a reskin. Every system was reconstructed by studying the original 1987 DOS binaries and data files, then rebuilt from scratch in Unity so it can grow beyond what the DOS version could do — while still playing like the game you remember.
- Binary archaeology — maps, tables, formulas and data pulled directly from the original files.
- Switchable graphics — play in EGA, CGA, Tandy, VGA, C64, FM Towns or Apple IIGS styles, plus borrowed Ultima II–V tilesets.
- The complete world — the full 168×156 overworld, 40 enterable locations (8 castles, 32 towns), multi-level dungeons, and the full star system for space flight.
- Faithful game systems — combat, magic, stats, shops and quests reconstructed to match original behavior.
- 15+ music packs — FM Towns, PC-98, later Ultima arrangements and fan arrangements.
Systems Implemented
- Overworld exploration across the full map of Sosaria.
- Towns & castles — talk to NPCs, shop, take quests from the kings.
- Dungeon crawling — first-person, multi-level dungeons with monsters and treasure.
- Space combat — launch into orbit and fight in the star system.
- Sound & music — period-accurate audio with multiple selectable packs.
- Multi-tileset rendering — switch graphics styles on the fly.
Controls
- Arrow keys — move
- Z — Ztats (character stats) E — Enter B — Board X — Xit
- T — Transact A — Attack C — Cast Space — Pass turn
- F1 — toggle free camera Mouse wheel — zoom
A full quick-reference is available in-game.
The game also comes with full controller support!
